Waiting For Prescriptions Is Expensive

Sunday January 11, 2009

For one month I vowed not to spend money on anything I didn’t need; basically no purchases other than food and gas. I didn’t think it would be that difficult. And my resolve was holding out…until Saturday…when I had to pick up a prescription.

The pharmacist said it would only be 10 minutes. There was nothing much to do except walk around the drug store. Next thing you know I had picked up $88 dollars worth of stuff: shoe polish, masking tape, a pull-up bar, one box of duraflame logs, and 6 Cadbury Crème eggs.

The scary thing – I didn’t even realize what I had done until I got out to the car. It never consciously crossed my mind that I was breaking my vow. I have been programmed to shop while waiting for prescriptions - frightening. I could have grabbed a magazine, or a book, and spent 15 minutes reading. Instead, I spent money.

I need to add “avoid unconscious spending” to my 10 Ways to Save $10 A Day list. I wonder how much I spend each year this way? I wonder how much you spend each year this way?
