Book Title: Die Broke
Author: Stephen M. Pollan and Mark Levine
Readability: Easy to read, filled with real life stories.
Technicality: Second half of book a little technical; provides authors take on all kinds of investments and insurance products.
Provides Practical, How To Knowledge On: A completely different way of planning for and thinking about retirement.
Summary: Die Broke provides a contrarian approach to the traditional view of retirement and retirement planning. He promotes the ideas of working for money rather than for job satisfaction, paying cash for everything, scratching the idea of ever truly “retiring”, and planning on using all your funds while you’re alive.
Stephen Pollan uses real life client stories and straight talk to explain to you why traditional views of retirement and traditional retirement planning just won’t work for the baby boomer generation. In the second half of the book, he provides a brief summary of his views on all kinds of investment and insurance products from money market funds to long term care insurance. This book will challenge your views, and the second half of the book can be used almost like a dictionary; a source of reference to read before you consider any investment or insurance purchase.
Downside: Stephen certainly does not mince his words in Die Broke. Some may find his ideas and the style of presentation offensive. I don’t agree with all his advice, but his approach, although not for everyone, is one worth considering.
